As I announced at last night's club meeting, I would like to extend an open invitation to anyone who would like to join Rick Aveni and I at the Ontario Lots site on Saturday, January 23, 2010 between the core hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm for an unofficial (i.e., not club-sponsored) group hunt. There is no sign-up list, requirement to be there at a particular time, or even to be a club member; this group hunt is open to all comers. If you're not a member and have thought about joining the club, this is an opportunity to talk with a few members and find out more about us. Note that you are free to come early or stay later if you'd like.
Here's the background story: Rick and I both purchased White's Spectra V3 detectors late last year and got the idea that perhaps we might be able to find stuff with our new detectors that others have missed (yeah, sure!). We decided to head back to the Ontario Lots site, which club members have hunted heavily. That said, one club member pulled out a silver dime and a wheatie just within the last two weeks, so there may still be hope. However, please be realistic in your expectations and understand that this location has been heavily hunted and you may not find anything at all. The purpose of this hunt is for the challenge of seeing if we can find something good despite long odds.
One request: If you find something good (coin or otherwise), I would like to know what it is and get a photo, if possible, so we can "document" how well we did and report back to the club at the next general meeting. Because of the size occupied by these lots, we will be spread out all over the place and there will be no specific meeting location. I will wear a reflective traffic vest in case you want to locate me to discuss your finds or to ask questions about the club, etc.
For club members only, I have uploaded a PDF copy of a color Google Earth map of the Ontario Lots to the Archives. I will also bring copies of this map and leave them on my car for anyone to take. (I will also put a distinctive marker TBD on my car so you can tell.) For non-members, please see the following link to Google Maps for the general area where we will be: MAP. If you need specific cross streets, come to the intersection of E. State Street and S. Garfield Avenue, which will put you in the middle of the lots. Note that there are fewer houses still remaining than appear in the Google Maps image on-line (or the map I will bring/have uploaded).
Feel free to post public comments/questions here (hit reply). You may send a private message to me at jerrymyers@aol.com if you prefer.
